a simple fragrance wasted by this alchemy --
such a fine potion
all wrapped up and ready to buy.

You used to write letters
till your voice got jealous.

like you got something to tell it.

The windows are drawn.

You’ll mix manhattans
in paper cups.

Your skin was broken,
a chrysalis housing an asymmetric butterfly --
finally awoken
and terrified of being alive.

You’re up at dawn
for all the wrong reasons.
Another new day
in another long season.

Look at the sky,
it’s purple and crimson.
You’re bruised and you’re bleeding
but you lose some, you win some.

You were a child
once in your raincoat, holding your umbrella high --
frightened and wild
so certain you were able to fly.
